OPP urges caution as boating season begins

opp-boatThe Ontario Provincial Police is urging extreme caution as many people prepare to get their boats on the water for the first time this season.

The Canal may not be opening, but there are plenty of other boating options as many use the long-weekend to take their first cruises.

They say we all have to be very careful as high water levels could hide potential dangers like rocks that are normally visible on the surface.

Chief Superintendent Chris Harkins, Commander of the OPP's East Region also says, "If you are traveling in areas still experiencing high water levels, please be aware of the damage that can be caused by excessive wake."

He adds that, "Most of all, I encourage everyone to be safe and follow the rules and ensure you have all your required safety equipment, which includes the use of PFDs."

The OPP also reminds you that drinking and boating definitely don't mix. They’ll be out in full force on waterways all weekend long.
