First Legacy Cottage Plaques presented to celebrate Canada 150 in Lanark County

When cottage season officially opened on May 20, 2017, seven families who have cottaged on Farren Lake for 50 years or more were presented with a Legacy Cottage Plaque by Lanark County, Tay Valley Township, and Farren Lake Association President, George Willett.

The lure of Lanark County’s lakes and rivers continues to draw families back every summer just as they’ve done for 50, 75, 100, and 125 years. The county noted in a release that one family has been cottaging on Mississippi Lake for generations. Their family has been cottaging on the lake for 165 years, since 1852.

As part of its Canada 150 celebrations, Lanark County is honouring those families who have been cottaging in Lanark County for 50 years or more by presenting them with a Legacy Cottage Plaque.

Over the next few months, Lanark County Warden Bill Dobson (Montague Reeve) and/or the head of council of the particular municipality, along with the lake association president, will present some 180 plaques to families across the county.

“I’m thrilled that Tay Valley Township artist Franc van Oort graciously gave his permission to use one of his etchings for the Legacy Cottage plaque,” said Keith Kerr, Tay Valley Township Reeve. “The moment you look at this etching, you’re taken to the cottage.”

The Legacy Cottage plaques indicate the number of years the cottage has been in the family as of 2017, and are personalized with the cottage or family name recipients wish to have on their plaque. Recipients pay $60 to cover the cost of their plaque. The plaques were produced by the Silver Shingle, a local company in Lanark Village.

More information about the Legacy Cottage Program, including the application form, can be found on the Lanark County and municipal websites. It is also available in municipal offices for those who don’t have internet access.
