UPDATE -Smiths Falls Lock it or Lose it campaign to include partnership with Smiths Falls and District Crime Stoppers

July 12, 2017 by

Smiths Falls will now have a partner for the Lock it or Lose it campaign.

The Smiths Falls Police Service has partnered with the Smiths Falls and District Crime Stoppers for the crime prevention program popular with law enforcement agencies across the province and country.

We want to clarify that this is an existing program and not a new initiative. It was mistakenly refereed to as a new effort in a previous article. Smiths Falls Police Service says that the program has been running in the town for more than five years. It normally runs in the summer months and around Christmas time each year.

The force wanted to clarify that this is the first time they have partnered with the local Crime Stoppers for the initiative.

Members of Crime Stoppers and Police officers in the town will be checking vehicles in the community for the remainder of the summer months to make sure they’re locked up. They place a small notice on vehicles checked indicating what safety precautions were neglected and offer simple prevention tips for drivers to protect their vehicles against theft. The notices also congratulate drivers who have secured their vehicle.

Police are urging the public to keep their vehicles locked, keys removed, valuables out of sight and their windows closed to deter thieves from entering.

This initiative is provided by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
