Locks 01Smiths Falls Mayor Shawn Pankow hopes to bring back a wealth of new expertise from a global three-day canal conference next week.

“It’s a good opportunity to learn about what they’re doing elsewhere to preserve the asset [canal] and leverage the asset to attract more people to our community,” said Pankow, in an interview with Lake88.

Pankow has been invited by the World Historic and Cultural Canal Cities Cooperation Organization to attend the World Canal Forum in the city of Yangzhou, China.  The invitation is all expenses paid and will not be subsidized by taxpayers.

Several Ontario mayors received the invitations, including Kingston Mayor Bryan Patterson who is not able to attend and two other mayors from communities on the Trent-Severn Waterway.

“As far as I know I’m the only mayor from the Rideau Canal who will be attending, assuming the visa comes through on time,” said Pankow.

The forum is co-hosted by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Jiangsu Province, China; Yangzhou Municipal Government and the China National Council for Pacific and Economic Opportunities.

The three day conference starts on Friday Sept 8.
