Smiths Falls Fire Chief Normand Beauchamp told council last night that he will be stepping down, effective the end of October.

The Chief says he will be moving on to a larger community, but couldn’t tell the Mayor and Councillors which one.

He told the meeting held at the arena, “I want to thank each member of council for your support. It was a great pleasure working for the Town of Smiths Falls.”

He’s been chief since October of 2013. He’s implemented a new organizational structure which sees three lieutenants take on many responsibilities. He has also increased training for all firefighters, full-time or volunteer, which puts an emphasis on fire prevention.

Mayor Shawn Pankow recognized that council always knew that Beauchamp saw Smiths Falls as a stepping stone, and made sure to compliment him for the work he did in his four years of service.

Those sentiments of thanks were echoed by Councillors around the table.
