lanark-county-logoLanark County is in a good position to deal with the proposed provincial Safer Ontario Act, thanks to the Lanark County Situation Table.

The Act, which is in third reading, will require, among other things, that all municipalities prepare and adopt a community safety and wellness plan and identify risk factors.

On Wednesday January 10th, 2018, Stephanie Gray, Situation Table Co-Ordinator and Inspector. Derek Needham, Lanark County OPP Detachment Commander, updated Lanark County’s community services committee on their progress.

Insp. Needham told Councillors the Lanark County Situation Table is “well ahead of the curve on this.”

A second draft of a community safety plan is in the works. He said the Act mandates a community advisory committee and that has already been established.

The Situation Table first met in September, 2015. It’s made up of representatives from various human services sectors - including mental health, police, justice and school boards. Individuals who are at risk are referred to the table and representatives work together on a streamlined plan of action.

Gray told Councillors since its inception, the Lanark County Situation Table has had 140 referrals, with 65% of those coming from police.
