Male arrested for drug related offence
On Monday January 8, 2018 at approximately 8:35 p.m. police received information that a suspect was at a restaurant on Beckwith Street North in Smiths Falls trying to sell white powdery substance which he was trying to pass off as cocaine, a schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. (The substance determined not to be cocaine.) The 25 year old male from Smiths Falls was subsequently arrested for trafficking a substance held out to be a schedule 1 controlled substance. He was held for a bail hearing to answer to this charge.
Male driver charged with impaired driving by drugs
On Tuesday January 9, 2018 at approximately 12:38 p.m. police conducted a traffic stop on Ferrara Drive, Smiths Falls. The 34 year old male driver of Smiths Falls, was suspected to be impaired by drug or alcohol by police. Police conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) which the driver failed. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The driver was found not to be impaired by alcohol and was transported to the Ottawa Police Service for drug testing. An Ottawa Police Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) conducted tests on the driver and found him to be impaired by drugs.
The suspect’s driver’s license was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 7 days. The suspect was later released by way of a promise to appear in court and officer in charge undertaking. Police remind motorists that being impaired by drugs carries the same penalties as driving under the influence of alcohol.
Male arrested for impaired driving
On Tuesday January 9, 2018 at approximately 1:35 p.m. police received a call from a concerned citizen in regards to a suspected impaired driver. Police located the vehicle driving on Ferguson Drive, Smiths Falls and conducted a traffic stop. Police suspected that the 55 year old male driver from Smiths Falls was impaired by alcohol. Police conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST), to which the driver failed. The driver was placed under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and transported to the Smiths Falls Police Service. Police conducted a breath test on the driver and it was found that he had more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The suspect stands charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The suspect had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for a period of 7 days as a result. The suspect was later released by way of a promise to appear in court.
Male arrested for outstanding warrant
On Thursday January 11, 2018, police located and arrested a 27 year old male suspect, of Smiths Falls for an outstanding arrest warrant. The warrant was issued stemming from a December 30, 2017 incident in where the suspect was found to be breaching his release conditions. The suspect is charged with one count of breaching his recognizance of bail and one count of breaching officer in charge undertaking. The suspect was held for a bail hearing to answer to these charges.
