Rideau Lakes Township is planning to purchase the former Rideau-Centennial Public School in Portland from the Upper Canada District School Board.

The Westport Review-Mirror reports the municipality would take over the building on Highway 15 on February 1st of 2019, for a purchase price of $140,000.

Rideau-Centennial was just closed in June of 2017.

Township Mayor Ron Holman feels the purchase will result in a number potential uses for the school building.

One possible tenant could be the Rideau Lakes Library that currently rents a smaller space in commercial offices in Portland.

There is also the possibility of housing the local food bank, as well as the clothing cooperative, currently housed in the Portland Hall.

Talks have also been held with the OPP to gauge their interest in relocating to the school from their current headquarters at the South Elmsley Municipal Complex.
