Shawn-PankowSmiths Falls Mayor, Shawn Pankow will be appearing at the Senate Committee on Social Affairs Science and Technology hearing today to advocate for the speedy passage of Bill C45, Cannabis Legalization.

As Pankow told Lake 88, he hopes to convince the Senate not to delay legalization. "I wanted to give the senate some insight into how legal cannabis has the potential to transform our community and certainly many communities and the overall Canadian economy.

He commented on the overall effects for the town after the success of Canopy Growth. "So we’ve seen obviously incredible growth in our town through jobs, the expansion of the Hershey plant.  Tweed’s burst through its boundaries and occupies more property."

The mayor says that at some point in time Tweed will likely occupy a million square feet of space and provide over a thousand jobs for the town.

The Mayor says Tweed’s move to the town has been very positive for the town and he sees no benefit to delaying the process of legalizing cannabis.

He added that he will encourage the Senate to proceed with third reading and support the legislation in order for legalization to move forward this summer.
