SFDCI Girls’ Rugby team captures OFSAA Bronze

The Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) girls’ varsity rugby team earned bronze this week at the OFSAA Girls’ A/AA Rugby Championship in Stratford.

The RedHawks defeated Trenton High School 32-10 on Wednesday to earn their medal.

Coach Jacob Swarbrick said he was proud his girls won bronze, but added it was bittersweet after narrowly missing the gold-medal game. The RedHawks fell 19-15 to Bayside Secondary School of Belleville in the semi-finals. This is the second year in a row SFDCI earned bronze at the tournament.

The coach said there were several factors that played into the team’s success.

“It was, in large part, the team’s physical strength and conditioning,” said Swarbrick. “We also won bronze last year so we’ve been in the big games before.”

Leadership by players Amy Wynne and Sierra DeVries helped maintain the team’s composure during the competition and gave confidence to SFDCI’s younger players.
