Hillier, the MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston has held several critic portfolios in the Progressive Conservative shadow cabinet over the years, but after 11 years as in opposition at Queen’s Park, he reportedly asked Premier Doug Ford to leave him out of cabinet consideration when the Tories won a resounding majority on June 7th.

Hillier told the Citizen that he is comfortable with where the government is moving and thought his abilities and skills could be better utilized to also help and modernize the legislative assembly.

The speaker will be elected by secret ballot among all the MPPs today.

Also seeking the position are fellow Tories, Ted Arnott (Wellington-Halton Hills), Burlington MPP Jane McKenna, and MPP Rick Nicholls (Chatham-Kent-Leamington).
