Bear Sighting In Perth- July 31, 2018

IMG_1834The Town of Perth is warning residents that there has been a bear sighting within the town over the past couple of days.

The bear was seen in the South Street area, near Algonquin College. A listener also spotted a bear cub near her back deck on Rideau Ferry Road on Sunday.

While it’s not unusual for bears to wander to within town limits, the town says it’s important that it doesn’t become a nuisance animal. Generally, bears are quite timid and want to avoid humans. Most encounters are not aggressive and attacks are rare.

That being said, call 9-1-1 if you feel a bear is imposing an immediate threat, or if it tries to enter a home, or public gathering, or if it kills livestock or pets and lingers at the site.

If a bear is roaming around, checking garbage cans, in a tree, or moving through a back yard or field, but is not lingering, you’re asked to call the Bear Wise line at 1-866-514-2327.

The town of Perth also asks residents to avoid drawing bears into the area, by storing garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting lids, putting garbage out the morning of pick-up, keeping pet food indoors and cleaning the grill of the BBQ after each use.
