Cross-walk reorganization in Smiths Falls as new St. Francis school set to open in Sept.

Ross and Percy Smiths FallsWith the closure of St. James School on Catherine Street in Smiths Falls and the opening of the new St. Francis De Sales School on Ross Street, Town Council has just passed a motion that will shift crossing guard locations around town.

The town provides crossing guards at five locations during every school year, and with the change in schools, is eliminating the crossing guard at Brockville and Oak Street, instead there will be a new crossing at Broadview and Brockville Street.

They’re also setting up a temporary crossing at Ross and Percy (pictured) for the start of the school year. It’s a busy four way stop that’s often crowded with cars, buses and pedestrians both adult and children.

Over the summer the town tasked a summer student with studying the intersection and found that a significant number of children cross at that intersection. So as of September there will be a crossing guard at Ross and Percy.  If it looks like it needs to become a permanently manned crossing the town will go ahead and install the necessary signage and pavement markings.

In the meantime all other crossing guard locations will remain the same and they are at Russell and Elmsley, at Brockville and Ross, at McGill and Chambers and at Queen and Anderson.
