The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has issued a warning: as a result of significant rainfall over the weekend of June 15, water levels on Dalhousie Lake have increased about 20 cm above the predicted levels and are expected to increase an additional 10 to 15 cm in the next two days.

Levels throughout the western portion of the watershed will continue to remain high for at least the next two weeks; the MVCA said any significant rainfall during that period may make things worse.

Watershed dams are being operated to manage the increased flows.

The MVCA says these areas are extremely dangerous for recreational users of the river system and are advising us to stay well clear of any dam while swimming, boating or fishing.

The town of Perth is filing an appeal of Lanark County’s inaugural official plan with the province.

Perth Councillors decided on the move at a special council meeting Friday afternoon.

They are concerned the county’s official plan, as it now stands, could affect the town’s future growth.

It doesn't recognize the town’s recent annexations and projects the town’s population will only increase by 700 by 2013.

Perth’s planning administrator Eric Cosens reported to the town that, “The population targets in the county official plan will all but negate the need for the town’s sanitary treatment facility upgrading.” As a result, plans to provide sewer and water services to annexed lands north of Hwy. 7 could be uncertain.

Costs of the appeal are unknown, but would include consultants and perhaps legal fees.

An updated consultants’ report on a planned Perth arterial bypass points out growing traffic volumes on town streets that were never designed for heavy truck traffic.

AECOM Canada’s report says traffic delays on Wilson and Gore Streets have have also resulted in an increase in collector traffic on Drummond Street. It also notes safety concerns for pedestrians, plus hazards resulting from increased road and train traffic at the town’s level rail crossings.

Improved access to the Perthmore subdivision, located on Perth’s northeast limits, the report says, is also needed, including access to Highway 7.

The bypass will be built by Lanark County under an agreement with the town at a cost -- for its initial stage -- of about $7.5 million. It will eventually link Highway 7 with Craig Street, or Highway 43.

Perth Planning Director Eric Cosens says the AECOM report had to be updated five years after the Environmental Assessment process to ensure the project still meets provincial regulations, including the Species at Risk Act, before it goes to the design stage.

Cosens will discuss the arterial project on Lake 88’s In Focus program tomorrow, right after the 12 noon news.

The Lanark Highlands museum in Middleville plans a June 23rd ribbon-cutting after its recent expansion. The project was made possible by a $100,000 grant from the Trillium Foundation, plus $25,000 in additional funding from the township.

Museum Board chair Alice Borrowman says the expansion couldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the added funding from Lanark Highlands council. She told Lake 88’s In Focus that community support has made it possible for the museum to make room for historic archives dating back 200 years.

Borrowman added the museum’s ground-floor exhibits are now fully accessible to those with disabilities.

The official celebration of the expansion will take place between 1 and 4pm on June 23rd, with the formal ribbon-cutting at 2pm.

The Smiths Falls Police Service would like to remind people and businesses to tale a closer look at the change you recieve when making a cash transaction.

The force has received complaints about people and businesses receiving foreign coins that are similar in appearance to Canadian coins in the change they get after a transaction.

In a release, police said it doesn’t mean there's a deliberate attempt to defraud people being perpetrated, but rather with the amount of people traveling to foreign countries it is easy for someone to mistakenly use a coin from another country in place of a Canadian coin.

The town of Perth will turn 200 in the year 2016, and the effort to get the town ready for that celebration is well underway. It’s called the Perth 200th Anniversary Legacy Project.

The organizers of the “Prettiest Street in Ontario" initiative, Jeff Dean and Tony Hendricks, say the project is going very well as they work on Wilson Street.

Hendricks says the project has been very well received, and the new trees complement the recent renovations to the street.

Dean says the goal is to make Wilson Street a red carpet of sorts from highway 7 to downtown.

When complete, more than 150 trees of many different varieties will have been planted along the route.

Dean adds that by the time 2016 rolls around the trees will be at their best.
