Medical officer of health Dr. Anne Carter says a “band-aid” solution to water contamination in Lanark Village won’t work.
In a letter to MP Scott Reid, she says his idea of filter systems on individual wells would require tests of well water three times a year. If tests aren’t done, she says there’s no assurance the wells aren’t still polluted. Carter says Reid’s suggestion also won’t resolve the threat of soil contamination or pollution of recreational waterways and source water for area municipal systems. Lanark Highlands council is urging residents to make themselves heard and to contact Reid and MPP Randy Hillier to tell them a water and sewer system for the village is vital to its future. The township has been turned down three times on applications for government grants to build the system. Reid has suggested as an interim solution the township pay for and install filtration systems on the existing private wells that are subject to contamination. That option doesn't satisfy Fletcher, the township council or the distruct health unit. They say it doesn't not address the sewage half of the problem or guarantee all residents potable water. The township's legal counsel concurrs, and questions whether Reid's solution would be possible given the limitations of the township's jurisdiction over private property. Council hopes there will be another round of Building Canada grant funding and that the project can still move forward. |
