Perth Mayor John Fenik would like to implement a minimum emissions standard for taxis operating in the town of Perth.
“It’s about providing leadership,” he said last night, “and reducing our carbon footprint.” Fenik suggested such a system could be implemented over a period of five years. Council directed staff to investigate the viability of establishing emission standards for taxis in Perth. Fenik said, “If it’s viable, I think it’s something I’d like to see pursued.” Councillor Ed McPherson asked for input from taxi owners and operators. He was concerned taxi owners wouldn’t be able to afford cars which met the town’s emissions standards. At the same meeting councillors voted to support the third Earth Hour – set for Saturday, March 26 and pledged to make sure the lights in the town hall will be turned off from 8:30pm to 9:30pm to support the event. |
