Lanark Highlands introduces electronic recycling in August

Starting next month, Lanark Highlands Township is adding waste electrical and electronic equipment to the list of items residents can bring to municipal waste sites free of charge for recycling.

The township will launch the program August 10th. It says it’s the first in the county to get approval from Ontario Electronic Stewardship to operate permanent collection depots as part of regular municipal waste diversion.

Other area municipalities host public events to collect and recycle unwanted electronic waste.

Items approved for recycling include computers, monitors, printers, TVs, VCR, DVD and MP3 players, cameras, phones, stereos and radios. The township program is part of broader provincial electronic waste recycling programs to make it easier to safely recycle electronic waste, keeping it out of landfills.

Public Works Assistant Cathie Green says the township is determined to preserve landfill space and divert as many materials for recycling as possible. After launch of its used tire recycling program, she says, the new initiative is another way to improve recycling services for residents while reducing waste management costs for the municipality.

Green pointed out, however, that The Ontario Electronic Steward program has a motto promoting reducing, reusing and recycling materials. She says residents should consider putting electronic equipment to new uses before considering it for recycling.
