Smiths Falls set to support Docs on Ice tournament
The Docs on Ice hockey tournament is being hosted in Lanark County this year. The annual charity event started in 1983 and has raised more than $1 million for causes in its host communities.
On Monday Feb 11, the tournament organizers approached Smiths Falls Committee to ask for a reduction in ice fees and help promoting the event and welcoming visitors.
“We’ll do what we can to support and welcome you, we’re excited to have more than 1000 doctors here in our community,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow.
Several local doctors were on hand to lend their support including Graham Hendry, who has been involved with the tournaments since 1997.
“The funds raised in a community stay in that community – hence the involvement of your doctors to choose the charities that benefit,” said Bob Van Noppen, a member of Docs on Ice, addressing committee in Smiths Falls.
The event will take place on March 28th to 30th, and the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre will be the hub for the players and their entourages.
“We’ll be fielding 61 teams or 900 players plus, and they’ll be bringing their families and hangers on, so more than a 1000 people,” said Van Noppen.
The Thursday night kick-off to the event will be in Smiths Falls with Hockey Legends vs Docs on Ice.
“This year we’ll have a few female hockey teams, so we’ll have a few female Olympian Hockey players as well,” said Van Noppen.
Van Noppen did reveal that Guy Charbenneau will be among the Hockey Legends to participate.
Hockey games will be played throughout the county but most of the daytime activities will be held at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre.
