Smiths Falls Building Dept has busy year
It’s been an unusually busy year for the Smiths Falls building department with the town issuing a little over $2 million worth of building permits.
“Close to 90 percent of that was Tweed,” explained town treasurer Janet Kozeil.
Other projects have included renovations at TR Leger and Saint James Schools, a new Chiropractic Clinic, and new residential development by Park View Homes as well as renovations at the Rideau Hotel, according to a report prepared by David Sutherland, the town’s Chief Building Official.
Drawing on experience, Councillor Niki Dwyer raised concerns that such a large intake on building permits could trigger a red flag for the town auditor.
“We have had in depth discussion with the auditor, and she knows it’s an anomaly that may continue for two or three more years before we go back to normal growth. She is not in any shape or form raising any concerns, ” said Kozeil.
The town’s current building reserve as of the end of 2018 sits at a little more than $2.2 million.
