Smiths Falls reevaluates Beckwith St. redevelopment after single over-budget bid received – will wait for report from Director of Public Works
Smiths Falls council is putting any further discussion of the Beckwith Street project on hold. The project Request for Proposals closed on April 11, and only one bid was been received by the town.
“We received one bid from Ottawa Greenbelt Construction Company Ltd for $9,524,770 which is much higher than anticipated,” Director of Corporate services Kerry Costello told council.
According to town Treasurer Janet Kozeil, that amount includes HST and after rebates would come in at about $8.5 million. The town had budgeted about $5.7 million including the OCIF funding.
According to Costello, Troy Dunlop, Director of Public Works and Utilities will be bringing forward a report to council in the next couple of weeks. “Until we hear from Director Dunlop on how to move forward, I think this is a good time to take a pause until we have more information,” said Councillor Chris McGuire.
Not all council members agreed with the proposal to put further discussions on hold. “There are two more delegations on this topic, and I want to hear from everyone,” said Councillor Jay Brennan. “I’m in favour of a public meeting but if it has to be delegations, so be it. In my view this delay gives us more time to hear from people.”
Council passed a motion directing staff to defer any new delegations until after Dunlop tables a report.
