Debate begins over new cell phone tower in Carleton Place
Despite Carleton Place’s best efforts to manage which areas tall structures can be placed, a development permit application has been submitted for a telecommunication tower on Lansdowne Avenue.
Shared Network Canada has identified the property at 55 Lansdowne as the optimal location for a 35 Metre tall structure that will provide improved wireless service.
Council raised concerns over how the structure would not fit in with its local environment. However, cellular towers are regulated by the Federal Government through Industry Canada. That means the project is not subject to provincial legislation, allowing it to circumvent the town’s development permit bylaw.
The project is subject to Industry Canada’s public consultation process, and the public are encouraged to come to council with their concerns.
During Tuesday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting, council agreed to prepare a written submission outlining any relevant issues.
Council will have until May 8th to submit their concerns to Shared Network Canada.
