Highlights of the May 7, 2019 Council Meeting of Mississippi Mills

There were two delegations to start the Council meeting off last night. Marilyn Bird, Executive Director of Lanark Transportation provided information on a proposed pilot transportation project in Mississippi Mills that would have fixed routes for residents of Mississippi Mills to go to destinations in the County. The second delegation was from Scott Newton, General Manager and Paul Virgin, President from Mississippi River Power Corporation (MRPC). The gentlemen presented an overview of MRPC functions including the corporate structure, 2018 annual report, shareholder payments operations, dams, and plans for 2019. Paul Virgin also presented a dividend payment of $225,000 for 2018 to the Deputy Mayor.
Carter Reid, a grade 8 student of Holy Name of Mary Catholic School, was presented with an Achievement Award for his acts of service for his school and community. Carter’s latest effort has been to collect enough pop can tabs to buy a wheelchair for a person in need. There are tens of thousands of tabs already collected. Carter is a wellrounded young man that we’re lucky to have in our community!
Council formally appointed Ken Kelly as the new Chief Administrative Officer for Mississippi Mills. Ken brings over 20 years of municipal experience, his first day will be May 28th.
Council declared May 26 to June 1, 2019 as National Access Awareness Week in Mississippi Mills. The campaign is created to promote better community access for people with disabilities who encounter barriers every day. The Municipality will be publishing daily accessibility tips and information for residents as well as businesses throughout the week. Also keep an eye out for posters and brochures distributed to local businesses.
Almonte Daycare will now have different operating hours for its childcare programs. The daycare hours will be 6:30 am to 6:00 pm effective July 1, 2019. This change will allow a cost savings as well as an opportunity for daily staff program preparation.
The Seasonal Stand By-law for chip wagons and fresh produce stands has now been revised and approved. The changes include licence and insurance requirements, offenses and enforcement, and fees and charges. All licences that have been issued in 2019 will not be affected by the changes. Please refer to the website for the new application forms, new fees, and the new by-law.
Council made a resolution request to the Minister of Municipal Affairs to “activate” the Municipality so that individuals, small owner-operated businesses, and farmers affected by the floods could access the Disaster Relief Assistance program for Ontarians. The Ministry has already visited to assess the area, once the Municipality receives further updates we will notify affected residents. National Nursing Week has been proclaimed this week, May 6 to May 12, 2019. Nurses are an integral part of our community serving residents of all ages with skill, knowledge and caring commitment. Residents are encouraged to recognize the many services provided by dedicated nurses and the tremendous contributions they make to the health and well-being of our community every day.
May 19 to May 25, 2019 has been proclaimed as Public Works Week. It’s a week to pay tribute to our public works professionals, engineers, managers and employees who are responsible for rebuilding, improving and protecting our water supply, water treatment systems, public buildings, roads, structures and facilities essential for our residents. We would like to recognize the substantial contributions they make to protect our health, safety and quality of life on a daily basis. The Municipality will be publishing public works facts daily throughout the week.
