Perth hopes Via considers a stop in town as part of next expansion
The Federal government is trying to expand VIA Rail services to get more people riding trains, and Mayor John Fenik would love to see those plans include adding a train stop in Perth.
During Tuesday night’s council meeting, Mayor Fenik discussed a federal plan to put up over $71 million dollars to improve the service.
According to the mayor, after having discussions with people at VIA Rail, there seems to be a need for a stop in Perth.
The mayor said he has had “four or five meetings” with VIA Rail already, including with the president of the company, where building a Perth station was specifically brought up.
The federal money will to go towards conducting studies, track acquisitions, and stakeholder engagements, among other plans which Mayor Fenik told council were a big step towards getting the town closer to frequent rail travel.
