New math supports for boards to help region’s students: MPP Clark

The Ontario government is launching a major effort to strengthen math skills for students across the province, including those in the Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.

In a release MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands & Rideau Lakes Steve Clark said, “Our government recognizes that building students’ math knowledge and skills is vital to help them lead successful lives when they graduate. I’m proud that we’re investing over $1.3 million in our local school boards in the coming school year to support them in improving math skills.”

The release says funding for these local supports is part of the government’s four-year math strategy, which is focused on building fundamental math concepts and skills and then teaching students how to apply them. In 2019-2020, Ontario will be supporting the strategy with a $55-million investment.

The Ford Tories say the math strategy will ensure that students are prepared for success in the classroom and in their future, that teachers are confident and capable in teaching math and that parents and families are confident and equipped to support their children.

In the same release, Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education stated: “We are listening to parents and educators. Ontario students need greater support to strengthen their math skills to achieve success in school and into their careers. This investment provides our young people with access to the skills they need to enter the workforce with confidence and further underscores our government’s focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in the classroom.”

In addition to the funding for school boards, the government is committed to helping improve math scores by investing more than $6 million for summer initiatives throughout the province. The online resource, called Math at Home, will help support student learning, mitigate against summer learning loss and ensure parents are aware of opportunities to help prepare their children for success in math.

There has been no official response from the Opposition NDP, LIberals, or Green Party to the announcement.
