Shaw’s of Perth not closing – change of operator in the offing as 200+ year tradition set to continue
The owners of the building currently housing Shaw’s of Perth, the store with 200-plus years of service to the community, said in a statement that the store is not closing. It is however, undergoing major changes.
The owners of the building, John Quigley & Partners released a statement after the current operator of the store, Ahron Langbert, posted a letter claiming he had been kicked out, and that the Shaw’s tradition was coming to an end. The letter was photographed and shared on social media, resulting in a wave of disapproval from the public.
The statement by the current operator has been revised and posted to Facebook, it now reads:
TO OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS, for the past 24 years we have had the pleasure of serving you under the name of Shaw’s of Perth. Unfortunately we have been evicted with very little notice as the landlord wishes to take the building in a different direction. We hope you will come visit us one last time in the Perth location and take advantage of great savings. We are a family run business of over 60 years and will continue to do so in our other locations. As of November 30th we will no longer be affiliated with the Shaw’s of Perth name nor will it reflect our family values.
In his statement, Quigley says they have opted to consolidate the lease under one operator who will run an integrated store over both floors, and regretfully must part ways with the former operator. Quigley adds that they will continue to operate under the Shaw’s of Perth name, and the new store will be open in time for the Christmas Season. They also report that they will honour, maintain and improve its historic look.
Here is the complete (revised) statement from John Quigley and Partners:
Dear Valued Customers and Residents of Lanark County,
We would like to address the upcoming change in operators at Shaws of Perth.
Shaws of Perth has been servicing Perth and the surrounding area for over two hundred years. Despite changes in ownership, and operators, over two centuries the store remains a staple of the local community. We trust under our stewardship it will continue to do so for centuries to come.
In recent years, and most significantly the past number of months, several important events took place which led to the upcoming change in operators. Our decision was not made lightly, and has been taken in order to both maintain the long-term viability of the operations, and to maintain the historical significance of the building through proper and routine maintenance.
As owners of the building since 1977, we have opted to consolidate the lease under one operator who will run an integrated store over both floors, and regretfully must part ways with the former operator.
We will continue to honor the importance of this historic building by maintaining and improving its heritage look, as evidenced by the renovations currently taking place on the façade of the building.
The new vendor will continue to provide excellent products and services fully utilizing the building’s size, and proudly continue to use the name, Shaws of Perth.
We will announce the grand re-opening Shaws of Perth shortly, and you can be assured we will be open for the Christmas shopping season.
We look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks.
With warmth and respect: John Quigley and partners.
