Local teacher charged in historical sexual assault case
Lanark County OPP has charged a Perth man in connection to a historical sexual assault investigation.
42 year-old Jeffrey Peters has been charged with two counts each of sexual assault and four counts of sexual exploitation.
Peters is a history teacher at St. John Catholic High School and coached the Jr. Girls Basketball team.
The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario said in a statement, “As soon as we became aware of the allegations, the board acted promptly and proactively, and as a precaution suspended the teacher while police conduct their ongoing investigation.”
The board also stated that it has measures aimed at ensuring its students are safe. “Parents and guardians should be assured that the board has policies and procedures in place to protect students.Furthermore, a joint Child Protection Protocol and School Handbook are always made available to all personnel,” it read.
The OPP stressed the investigation is ongoing, and are urging anyone with more information pertaining to the case to contact them at 1-888-310-1122 or via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on December 16th.
