Donations of items and time now being sought for annual Smiths Falls gift campaign for seniors
Seven years ago former Smiths Falls Councillor Dawn Quinn started a Senior’s Christmas Stocking campaign after she realized that there were many seniors in retirement homes who didn’t receive anything at Christmas.
In the first year she filled 50 stockings and distributed them to seniors at Broadview Manor, in Smiths Falls, Hilltop Manor in Merrickville and Rosebridge Manor in Easton’s Corners. Since then, the campaign has evolved from stockings to gift bags and the numbers have ballooned as has the need for donations.
“We did 267 last year, so we want to do the same number this year if not more,” said Quinn.
Quinn said the most-needed items include pairs of socks, pairs of gloves, scarves, and hats. “And then things that they can hang onto,” she added, “We give them all a little stuffed animal. Everybody gets a candy cane, puzzle books, or maybe little puzzles with bigger pieces that they can put together, something that they can use their hands for, just something that can stimulate their mind.”
She also said wool, knitting needles and crochet hooks are good as are personal hygiene products like soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes are all great items to receive.
Stockings/Gift bags will be packed on December 16 and 17 at a location that is yet to be determined and deliveries will take place on Dec. 18.
