Highway 401 re-opened after fatal collision and multi-vehicle pile-up
The OPP report that on Sunday, December 1st, shortly after 2:30 p.m. officers from Frontenac Detachment as well as Kingston Fire and Frontenac Paramedics responded to a multi vehicle collision on Highway 401.
It happened in the west bound lanes between Highway 15 and Montreal Street – the exit that leads to the highway to Smiths Falls.
The collision involved 30 to 40 passenger vehicles and tractor trailers.
One person was declared dead at the scene. As of Monday morning at 6:30, their name had not been released pending next of kin notification.
The highway was closed for several hours as the investigation continued and the vehicles were removed. It was open in time for the Monday morning commute.
Kingston Police and the local Red Cross provided a warming centre at the nearby Rideau Heights Community Centre.
Stranded motorists not involved in the collision were being removed from the highway by Kingston City Transit buses and taken to a warming centre.
Vehicles left on the highway were towed and drivers are asked to call Frontenac Detachment of the OPP today for details where the vehicle was taken.
