Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser for local youth homelessness set for Saturday in Smiths Falls
The Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser for youth homelessness is coming up on Saturday in Smiths Falls. The event is a family-friendly walk that raises money and awareness for Cornerstone Landing which helps youth in Lanark County find viable living options and to improve their lives overall.Cornerstone Landing Chair Terrilee Kelford told Lake 88 News that this is the third year Cornerstone is hosting the event. “Its actually a national movement that is specifically developed to help non-profits raise money to address homelessness in their community.”
“I think the first year we held it we had about 60 walkers. Last year we had fewer walkers but raised more money, and this year it looks like we’re on target to beat both totals,” said Kelford.
You can find out how to register, or just get more information by clicking or tapping here. Participants can also make a $25 donation on the day of the event if they’d like to take part. Walks of 2, 5 or 10 km will be offered and rest stops are provided throughout the route. One of them will be at Cornerstone Landing’s mobile tiny home, giving participants the opportunity to tour the home built specifically to act as emergency housing for youth in Lanark County.
“We give out free toques to everyone who comes, and its kind of fun. People have really championed the cause and created some themes and traditions,” added Kelford.
Registration takes place at 4 at the Smiths Falls Youth Arena. Opening ceremonies take place at 5. The walks will begin at about 5:15. Between 6:00 and 8:00 pm a warm, light meal will be served to all walkers and volunteers.
All are welcome to take part.
