Discussions continue about new location for Victoria Park Campground in Smiths Falls
The town of Smiths Falls is still trying to figure out the best course of action for moving the Victoria Park Campground.
In October of 2019, Smiths Falls council supported a staff recommendation to respond to a request from Parks Canada to move the campground from the Federal lands it currently occupies.
Since then town staff have met with the Chamber of Commerce along with Parks Canada on six occasions, and whittled down potential new locations to three front runners: 85 William Street, the current home of the REAL Deal Store, Riverdale Avenue, and the former Donneybrooke Golf Course on Highway 43.
Council discussed the benefits of each location, and examined the drawbacks which included reading a letter from the Rideau Environmental Action League asking them to stop considering William Street.
Councillor Wendy Alford told council that the REAL Deal store is an important part of Smiths Falls. “They have dedicated volunteers and dedicated their lives to making Smiths Falls pretty forward thinking at the time it was established. You cannot understate the importance of REAL in our community,” said the Councillor.
Council agreed to have town staff continue working with the community to help the Chamber of commerce find a new location by conducting further review of the three options, determining what the town’s responsibilities would be at the site as well as begin public consultation through speak up Smiths Falls and public meetings when appropriate.
