Citizen’s driving complaint leads to impaired driving charges
On the 28th of August 2020 Smiths Falls Police received a report of an erratic driver. The vehicle was stopped and the investigating officer determined that the female driver was impaired by alcohol. Loriann Topping age 42 of Smiths Falls was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and over 80MGS. She was later released to appear court at a later date.
Arrests made in regards to theft from vehicles
On the 5th of September 2020 police responded to the area of Broadview Ave East in regards to a report of a male attempting to steal items from a parked vehicle in the driveway. Police located and arrested 32 year old Vikram AMBALAVANA of Mississauga ONT for failing to comply with a judicial order, trespass by night, theft under, attempt theft under, 3 counts of assaulting police officers who arrived on scene and mischief. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
On the 13th of September 2020 police responded to the Ross St area after a homeowner spotted a suspicious male going through vehicles. Police arrested and charged 23 year old Dale SCOTT of Smiths Falls with trespass by night, possession of property obtained by crime, theft under, possession of break-in instruments. Mr. Scott was held in custody pending a bail hearing and was later released by the Justice of the Peace to next court appearance.
**Police are continuing to warn the public to be vigilant. Lock your vehicles, do not leave keys inside your vehicle and secure all valuables. Leave lights on, close garage doors. Most crimes reported are crimes of opportunity.**
Disturbance downtown leads to arrest
On the 10th of September 2020 police arrested 62 year old Steve Stoddard of Smiths Falls for two counts of criminal harassment after receiving a complaint from a member of the public. During the arrest, the accused became assaultive towards police and damaged a store window. Stoddard further charged with assault police (2 counts), resisting arrest, mischief and causing a disturbance. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Counterfeit bill leads to arrest
On the 14th of September 2020 police arrested 49 year old Smiths Falls resident Wayne MALLORY after receiving a complaint that he allegedly passed a counterfeit bill. During his arrest, police uncovered other items in his possession stolen from another local business. As a result, Mallory charged with theft under and possession of property obtained by crime. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing due to outstanding charges already before the courts.
On the 15th of September 2020 police arrested and charged 51 year old Smiths Falls resident Dennis WHAN with theft after police identified him with store surveillance after employees observed the accused stealing merchandise. WHAN was held in custody pending bail due to similar fact outstanding charges.
