Smiths Falls updates Victoria Park lease agreements
Parks Canada and the Town of Smiths Falls have entered four new lease agreements on parcels of land in Victoria Park.
According to a staff report, Parks Canada has decided to repurpose Victoria Park after leasing land to the town for over one hundred years.
Control of the RV campground was removed from the town’s leases, while two basin water lots, a parking lot under the water tower, and two parcels of land along the streets of Lombard and Abbott remain under municipal maintenance. Director of Economic Development, Jennifer Miller said the agreement was broken into four leases so sections could be assessed individually.
Both Councillors Niki Dwyer and Chris McGuire voted against the bylaws. Dwyer said Parks Canada could take over Duck Island and mooring duties without much loss of value to the town. McGuire added concerns with the federal agency’s degree of involvement with previous projects such as the trail through Lower Reach Park.
Each of the agreements was passed with a vote of 5-2 at Tuesday’s council meeting.
