Section of Daniel Street in Smiths Falls now closed permanently
The Town of Smiths Falls has now permanently closed the section of Daniel Street between Beckwith Street and Elmsley Street.
Temporary barricades have now been moved in place. Permanent barriers will be installed once the removal of the road begins.
“This is an exciting first step in realizing the development of a Town Square at the Town Hall Complex,” said Art Manhire, Director of Community Services. “We’re looking forward to the end result and the creation a vibrant community space we can all enjoy.”
On March 15th, 2021 Council was presented with the Town Square design by Wildwood Designs. Part of that concept is the closing of Daniel Street between Beckwith Street North and Elmsley Street North.
The road allowance will remain in municipal ownership, however the space will be landscaped and redeveloped as a public open space. The Town Square concept has already received public consultation and been approved by Council.
Design concepts completed for this project include the addition of a butterfly pollinator garden, a pavilion, trees, and public benches, along with other landscaping features.
The closure of Daniel Street is the first step in this process.
