United Way Eastern Ontario outlines service demands for Lanark County Council
The Acting Regional Director for United Way East Ontario made a virtual appearance at Lanark County council’s community services committee meeting.
Jane Torrance brought council up to date on service demand increases caused by the pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, The United Way East Ontario has invested almost $350,000 in Lanark County and the Town of Smiths Falls outside of the programs supported by their usual calls for proposals.
The focus of these investments has been basic need, help for seniors and caregivers, mental health and crisis supports, and capacity for the community sector. It also includes almost $150,000 in food security programs.
Torrance stated that her organization believes that a collaborative approach can help achieve the goal of food security to people experiencing high levels of financial stress or isolation. She was asking council to consider this type of model in Lanark County.
The committee passed a motion to consider this request in the next round of budget discussions.
