Special exemption could hurry the installation of playground equipment at the Child Development Centre in Smiths Falls

Smiths Falls council hopes a procurement exemption will quicken the installation of playground equipment at the Child Development Centre on Ross Street.

At Monday’s Committee of the Whole, Director Art Manhire said the Town received zero bids on a tender to install playground equipment at the Child Development Centres on Ross Street and Thurber Street.

Several companies were interested but conceded the scope of work for both locations was beyond their capacity. Manhire requested council approve a separation of the projects because the installation on Ross Street is more complicated than that of Thurber Street and will need to be done when children are not present.

Councillor Niki Dwyer lamented that “these projects have been a long time coming,” referencing the CDC move to Ross Street almost four years ago.

The playground equipment, purchased in 2019, was intended for a 2020 installation that was deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
