Ceremony marks new option for first nations’ officers to be sworn in at Ontario Courts
Lanark County OPP Constable David Laviolette was presented an eagle feather from elder Dan Ross from Pikwakanagan First Nation in front of the Perth courthouse Wednesday morning.
Laviolette is one of two indigenous constables within the detachment ranks and has been stationed here since 2019 after working in the Northwest.
Laviolette said the eagle has great significance in indigenous culture.
The Lanark County OPP Constable worked with the court system to make the ceremony an option for indigenous members.
The constable hopes to see the option become more widespread among other Ontario detachments.
